It Wasn’t the Artificial Turf
tags: XanGo Soccer
One point that Real Salt Lake finished driving home at last Saturday’s match was this: the secret to their home field success was not in the artificial turf that “makes the ball take funny bounces” at Rice Eccles Stadium. I’ve never really bought into that argument anyway, since both teams are playing on the same field… I refuse to believe that the Meadowlands’ carpeting is responsible for all our losses to New York, either.
It definitely is a bit cliché to say, but there’s meaning in the phrase “there’s no place like home.” There just isn’t. You will never feel as comfortable, as secure or as happy as when you are at home. You can send some traveling fans, bring along your friends, even your family, but someone else’s stadium and someone else’s town is still their home; not yours.
There’s honor in defending your home from invaders. There’s an extra sense of duty when it comes to holding down the fort. And anything goes when your home is under attack—after all, it’s self defense—even a 6-0 trouncing. I’m glad that RSL understands this.
